Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris frequently speaks about her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, as a source of inspiration and guidance throughout her career.
On this historic night, Harris’ younger sister, Maya Harris, who is one of the vice president’s closest advisors, also reflected on their mother’s influence. Emotionally contemplating what Gopalan might have thought as Kamala accepted the Democratic nomination for president, Maya said, “I can just imagine her smiling and feeling so proud of Kamala. And then, without missing a beat, she’d say, ‘That’s enough. You have work to do.’”
